Covey and Jana's Wedding Chuppah
Quilt Show 2005

Machine pieced by Jean and machine quilted by Sandra Reed.

As a teenager, my eldest son, Covey, was given an antique quilt by his grandmother – a family piece handed down through the generations. It was a “Tree of Life” quilt and was already well used when he received it. He used it on his bed until he had graduated from university. At that time he said “Mom, when you make me a quilt, I want it to be a “Tree of Life”.

I drafted a block from that antique quilt and filed it away for that day when I finally started quilts for each of my three children. When Covey and Jana became engaged in the fall of 2003, they asked me to make the “Chuppah” that they would be married under. When I suggested to them that I could make a king sized bed quilt in Covey's “Tree of Life” pattern that could serve as a wedding canopy and then be used on their bed afterwards they were delighted. On the reverse side, in the borders, I appliquéd three Hebrew Quotations.

Sandra Reid created some absolutely wonderful machine quilted trapunto designs for the alternate blocks as well as the great border designs.
