"Quilters touch the past and the future"

We Made a Difference!

This photos show the new laundry room (and our Guild
logo) which was constructed over the summer using the
funds which our Guild donated to Inn from the Cold from the
money raised from our last raffle quilt. The washer and dryer had been donated but a laundry room was needed to make them functional, so our donation was used to pay for it. Now over night guests are able place their laundry in mesh bags which are put through the laundry to be ready for the owner to claim in the morning. Keeping dry feet is a challenge for guests of the Inn and being able to launder socks etc. significantly reduces the number of clean new socks
that need to be given out.
"Bravo" to those who contributed blocks to the quilt, worked on the construction and quilting and to the many members who sold the raffle tickets. You made a difference for people in our community!

2013 Quilt Show

Planning is well underway for our next show….and the
success of it rests on the pieces that members submit for
display…..so now is the time to plan which pieces you will have ready. At last weekend's retreat, many awesome pieces were begun which we will look forward to hanging. Our Guild has a reputation for displaying a wide variety of techniques, with pieces ranging from traditional to innovative art pieces. A number of people have come forward to be on the Show planning committee. And we would still welcome more so if interested let me know.
At the February meeting, ballots will be placed on everyone's chair soliciting suggestions for appropriate charities which we could support with our Raffle Quilt so please give us suggestions… and should you miss the meeting please e-mail your thoughts to me.
In March we will vote on the five most frequently mentioned to select the final one or two charities.

Silver Threads Quilt Show

I am left speechless by the extent and depth of our Guild's creative energy. From set up through to take down, our 2011 show, Silver Threads, was a great success. Under the leadership of Marilyn Sorochan, she and her team built upon the success of past events to showcase our Guild. The response from the public was overwhelmingly positive. We knocked their socks off! Founding President, Nora Jones, sums it up neatly, "Please pass on my congratulations to all your members on a very impressive 25th anniversary quilt show. It is incredible that, although quilting has existed for centuries, quilters continue to be so creative and innovative. The other exceptional trait of these fabric artists is their generosity in sharing their ideas and creations with everyone who shows an interest. As one of the six founding members, I continue to be amazed by the growth and development of a Guild that grew out of a very tentative first meeting. Although technology has revolutionized many aspects of quilting today, it was thrilling to see a few excellent hand quilters still proudly displaying their skills. Once again, congratulations to you all on a fine show. Sincerely, Nora Jones, President 1986-1988".

The Region of York Quilters Guild hosts a Quilt Show, usually every 2 years, which presents a perfect opportunity for you to share your work. All quilted items are accepted and you don't need to be an expert quilter to participate! Over the years, the response from the public has been wonderful, and the Guild is very proud that our membership, with talents as diverse as novice to nationally and internationally acclaimed artists, always puts on a fabulous show. Prizes are awarded in different categories and the Merchant's Mall, where local quilt shops sell their goods, is always great fun. More information will be provided by the Committee running the Quilt Show, including clinics on how to prepare your quilt for display. As with any community event, the Quilt Show relies on many volunteers to help run smoothly. If you are new to the Guild, volunteering with the Show Committee is a wonderful way to meet and work with other Guild members.

Raffle Quilts:

To coincide with the Quilt Show, the Guild membership participated in the design and making of the Raffle Quilt, as well as selling tickets. The proceeds from the raffle are split between different charities chosen by the Guild Membership. Members were encouraged to participate in the project by making a block, helping with the quilting and/or selling raffle tickets.

Challenges:

Part of the Quilt Show included a challenge issues to the Guild membership. The guidelines vary with each Quilt Show and entries are voted on by the membership, with prizes awarded in various categories. If you would like to offer a challenge, help set one up, or if you have an idea for one, kindly approach any member of the Executive Committee.
