Cathy and John

Sherri Hisey at our September 2011 Guild Meeting.
January 25th Meeting:
What fun! Our January meeting was dedicated to our Merchant Mall, and many exciting purchases were made!
November 23rd Meeting:
What a treat! Pot luck and Quilters of the Month Elaine Evans and Elizabeth Timm! Now, more commonly known as Mutt & Jeff, Frick & Frack or Laverne & Shirley. If you see one, you usually see them both. It all started at a Mary Kay cosmetics party in 1985. They found they had a lot in common besides having 4 children each! They both loved sewing. They took a beginning quilting class in 1991 taught by the Guilds own Penny Berens, joined the Guild the same year, and the rest is history!
For Display, please bring your Christmas quilts this month!
Remember to bring your "accessories" for appetizers and finger foods (and the finger foods themselves if you are on the list) and get ready for a great meeting focused on food, quilting and friendship!
And don't forget the doors open at 6:55 and the meeting starts at 7:15 pm!
October 26th Meeting:
Speaker Cathy Miller and John Bunge:
Canadian singer/songwriter Cathy Miller used to be a folksinger with a slightly jazzy bent. She performed at folk festivals, clubs and house concerts all across Canada and released five CDs of her music. She was a member of “Trilogy” (with Eileen McGann and David K), touring a very successful Christmas show each year called “Two Thousand Years of Christmas”. After growing up in London, Ontario, she started her career in Ottawa, moved to Calgary Alberta in 1990 and in 2000 to Victoria BC, where she now lives.
But that was before.
Now, Cathy and her husband John Bunge (a former member of The Gumboots from Yellowknife) travel the world, singing for quilting events, guild meetings and shows, and she is known as “The Singing Quilter”. To date, they have performed for over 500 quilting guilds and events on three continents. That's an audience of over 50,000 quilters in all!!!
They are having the time of their lives.
I could tell you more, but suffice it to say that you should come ready to be entertained!
Cathy and John put on a thoroughly enjoyable show that you will be giggling all the way home about!
Visit their website at http://www.singingquilter.com/
Please take note that the meeting times have changed slightly to work better with our new facility.
Doors will be open at 6:55pm and the meeting will start promptly at 7:15pm.
September 28th Meeting:
At the September meeting Sherri Hisey from Border
creek Station educated us on Settings &
Borders. The importance of balance in a
quilt‟s visual space, how to keep it simple when
decoding the math and some basic rules of thumb of
quilt designing.
Getting it all together in a unique and personal way
is key to Sherri‟s distinctive teaching style – there is
always a way to process your creative thoughts and
ideas into a finished project just let your imagination
soar! Sherri will also be including over 30 of her
own quilts into the lecture, so come with your
cameras and be prepared to be inspired! For a copy of Sherri's handout, please go to our Members page.
If you want to put some of this new found (or maybe
not so new) knowledge to work, Sherri will also be
presenting one of the season's side programs for
you. So got those old projects out of the closet and
finished up so there are no excuses not to join in on
this one, you are going to love it! Please go to The Beehive page for details on Sherri's challenge.
At the Region of York Quilters Guild, we try to keep the Program as varied and interesting as our guild members. Our main focus is to plan an event for each meeting. For most of our meetings that means bringing in a guest speaker to share their particular expertise through a lecture, at the very least. Our guest speakers may share their work through a presentation but we always ensure that a trunk show of quilts rounds out the lecture. Nothing can beat seeing full size quilts up close! If our guest speakers have authored books, created notions, or have kits we provide shopping opportunities before, after and at meeting break times. As many of our guest speakers travel from a great distance, this ensures that our members can keep on top of what is new & exciting in the quilting world.
At our November and May meetings we enjoy an old fashioned pot-luck dinner. Imagine over 100 of your favourite dishes served up in style! It is a great way to celebrate the Christmas season and the end of our guild year. Along with socializing during our break, we still include quilting entertainment. This is the time that we highlight our own members and either one quilter, or a group of quilting friends will delight us with a display. We have a tremendous range of skills in our guild and the “Quilter of the Month” feature is always well received. This year, our Quilt Displays will follow a colour scheme - red in September, orange in October, yellow in November, green in January, blue in February and purple in March.
Another eagerly anticipated evening is our Merchants Mall Meeting. Shops from around our area set up their booths and take over the entire meeting. Shopping has never been so fun and convenient!
Under the umbrella of Program, we also run many events that our members truly enjoy. These may include an annual Quilters Retreat weekend away, a Mini Retreat consisting of a day of quilting in town including a full lunch and dinner, a UFO Challenge to help complete our projects, and a Mystery Quilt project to start something new.
Hopefully you’ll find many reasons to join us for a fun event or evening!
